Standard siting of magnetic compass, record keeping, care and maintenance
Standard sitting:
Fitted on monkey island above the bridge.
Should be sitted on the ship’s centreline.
Should not be sitted close to magnetic materials.
Approved equipment should be at a safe distance.
Radar magnetron should be at a distance of 7 meters.
Importance of keeping deviation record:
Compass error and deviation should be checked once in every watch.
Compass error and deviation should be checked once changing course after prolong time.
We have to ensure magnetic compass is in good order.
We have to measure gyro error.
We have to measure deviation on different heading. In this way, trends can be found.
By keeping record it can be helpful when gyro fails.
Care and maintenance:
Bubble should be removed.
Free movement of Heeling error bucket.
Free movement of Gimbal arrangement.
Quadrantal spheres and flinders bar should be rust free. (Painted)
Access door should be closed.
Helmet should be used.
Protection from heavy sea.
Dimmer.
Should be sitted on the ship’s centreline.
