Radar as landfall aid
Radar is useful when navigating in coastal water in restricted visibility. Because in restricted visibility GPS signal might be disturbed.
But limitation,
Landfall object is not clear.
Landfall object is not reliable.
Landfall object may situated above or below the radar horizon.
Long distant landfall object is difficult to identification.
Lighthouse is not radar conspicuous object.
Sandy beach don’t give strong echoes.
Precautions when using radar
Required at least three landfall object for position fixing.
Compare radar bearing with visual bearing.
If possible, use radio aid in conjunction with Radar observation.
