Damping. Damping in tilt, Damping in azimuth, North settling
North settling:
To get North settling, further precession is applied.
This method is called Damping.
Damping can convert north seeking device into north settling device.
Damping can make North end of spin axis to settle in or near to meridian.
Free gyroscope=(tilt+ drift)
North seeking=(tilt+drift+gravity control)
North settling=(tilt+drift+gravity control+Damping)
Two methods of Damping:
Damping in tilt. (Sperry)
Damping in azimuth. (Anschutz)
Damping in tilt. (Sperry)
To get Damping in tilt, torque (horizontal force) is applied about vertical axis.
Damping in tilt is applied – when north end of spin axis moves out of horizontal.
Damping in tilt oppose the movement and bring it back to horizontal.
Rate of Damping precession (tilt) ∝ angle of tilt.
Damping in azimuth. (Anschutz)
To get Damping in azimuth, torque (vertical force) is applied about horizontal axis.
Damping in azimuth is applied – when north end of spin axis moves out of meridian.
Damping in azimuth oppose the movement and bring it back to meridian.
Rate of Damping precession (azimuth) ∝ sin Azimuth.
